Educationist commends DFID for supporting ARH issues

Nkoranza (B/A), March 5, GNA - Mr Godfred Axolu, Nkoranza Municipal Director of Education, has commended the Department for International Development (DFID) of the United Kingdom for supporting Adolescent Reproductive Health (ARH) issues in the country.

He said the effort of DFID was promoting the development of lifestyles of the youth of Ghana.

Mr Axolu was addressing 36 school-based health co-ordinators from the municipality at a three-day workshop on counseling skills on the ARH project at Nkoranza at the weekend.

The workshop was aimed at initiating programmes to address challenges facing the adolescent youth which could have adverse effect on their education and development.

Mr Axolu expressed concern about the increasing number of teenage pregnancies and school drop outs in the municipality and urged parents to be mindful of the movement of their children as a way of checking them against pre-marital sex and other vices.

He said the Ghana ARH project was being piloted in the country and called on all stakeholders to play their respective roles effectively towards its successful implementation.

The Municipal Director of Education advised teachers to live above reproach and serve as mentors to their students.

Madam Gifty Yeboah, Assistant Director of Administration at the Nkoranza Municipal Assembly and Focal Person of the project, mentioned Ghana Health Service, religious leaders, Ghana Education Service, traditional rulers, youth organisations and security agencies as some of the collaborating assisting in the implementation of the project.

Madam Yeboah particularly called on religious leaders to use the pulpit to intensify education on the causes and effects of teenage pregnancy to help the youth to lead decent lives and become responsible adults.

Topics discussed included: Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health, In School Adolescents - Challenges and Problems, Factors Affecting Adolescent Sexual and Reproduction, Basic Counseling Skills and Adolescent Psychology.
