The Issue Of Religion Or Faith In Schools.

I have been a victim of religious victimisation even as a Christian back in a missionary high school, so I write this article out of personal experience! I do not understand why the issue of religion in schools have become a bone of contention today! I also believe that most of the people who express their democratic views on this delicate issue do so in hypocrisy, imbalance and injustice. After all, we Ghanaians are consciously hypocritical in character.

Moreover, we all go to school to acquire education, training and skills in order to empower us to help our society. However, students are expected to obey the rules and regulations of their various schools which include religious aspects. And it is also expected of the school authorities to allow their students to express their faiths appropriately and in accordance with the school laws.

But in Ghana today, some missionary school authorities enforce their religious laws, but do not somehow tolerate the faiths of some of their students! And very recently, some Muslim students complained of being religiously victimised by some school authorities. These schools concerned especially the missionary ones also argue that their schools were founded on a particular faith and they operate as such.

So I ask this overlooked question seemingly mischievous to many people: "Are public Islamic schools legitimising the expression of other faiths in their schools as Muslim students in non-Islamic schools fight for? I leave this striking question for public Islamic school authorities and proponents of religious tolerance to answer. I believe in fairness, justice and balance, therefore, I say that all schools must tolerate the faiths of their students in accordance with state and school laws!
