A team from Ghana Armed Forces Command Staff college is to embark on one week environmental study tour and research in the Ashanti region on selected topical subjects challenging the environments.REGION

The tour which began yesterday is aimed yesterday to conduct intensive research in some vital environmental grounds that have raised series of concerns and has led to other social conflicts in the region.

Some areas the arm team will tour during the week include; the galamsey and Fulani herdsmen in the Ashanti region and its security implications for national security, Harnessing the potential of the defence industry and Suame magazine in Kumasi to achieve industrial development in the Ashanti zone.

Other research areas will focus on the youth unemployment and its security implications in the Ashanti region, Improving and sustaining Cicil-Military relations/the role of military in combating crime in the region and the development of the central command of the Ghana Army and its suitability in meeting the security challenges of the middle belt of Ghana.

This year study tour organized for students of the Ghana Armed Forces command staff college is to help familiarize themselves with civil society and to know what really happens on the ground especially as they affect our environment, industry, employment, crime, among others, and to come out with vivid findings and possible suggestions to coup the situations on the grounds.

The Ashanti regional minister Hon. Dr. Samuel Sarpong speaking at the interactive meeting with the team at regional coordinating council yesterday said, the rich culture and natural resources endowed in the region call for concious effort to preserve them through sound environmental management.

"Inspite of all these, the region is beset with serious environmental challenges which we are grapping wih and in which the armed forces together with other security agencies are actively involved in." He stated.

According to him, the Ghana armed forces play a crucial and strategic role in the security of the state which is a pre-requite for the socio-economic development of the country, adding that, the activities of the arm forces have ensured and continue to ensure the protection of the territorial integrity of our lands and waters.

He said, the military has generally helped and continue to support in the maintenance of peace and security which has manifested in areas such as decongestion exercises, anti galamsey operations, chieftaincy conflicts, operation cow leg, night patrol on highways and within communities among others.

He warmly welcome the team in the region on their itinerary, and hoped they will come out with relevant suggestions and recommendation to the research themes for the benefit of the country.

Commander Commodona J.O Kontoh who led the team in his remarks expressed his sincere appreciation on behalf of members to the minister for their warm reception saying that, the tour will go long way to help the region and the country as a whole.

He said, they will summit a copy of their findings and their recommendations to the government for consideration at end of their tour. Adding that, the tour will provide possible solutions to some challenging environmental problems stumbling the region.
