Destination Inspection Companies (DICs), responsible for inspection of import documents at the ports say they are indifferent about the planned introduction of the Advanced Shipment Information System (ASHI).

The programme would see companies abroad that supply goods to importers send the needed documentation on the ASHI portal before the vessel arrives in the country.

Although importers and freight forwarders have kicked out against the ASHI, the Shippers Authority is bent on implementing it from March 01 saying it would facilitate the work of the Authority.

Many DICs however assert ASHI would make no difference in their operations. Corporate Services Manager of one DIC, Gateway Services Limited, Amma Addo said “we don't have a direct bearing with ASHI because the documents they receive are not what we are going to use to do our work.

We have the necessary documents we need to do our work. For now, with the use of our offices overseas, we are able to do the verification we need. So, ASHI or no ASHI, destination inspection still goes on.”

Some business associations have meanwhile officially announced their plan to demonstrate next Wednesday against the ASHI and other concerns they have with the economy. They include the Ghana Union of Traders Association and the Chamber of Commerce.
