In a case of underage drinking, nine Class Five pupils of the Mamobi Prisons Primary School here in Accra have been suspended for displaying drunken behaviour in class.

JOYNEWS' Kwetey Nartey reports that a teacher found the pupils' behaviour to be abnormal and conducted a search, which revealed the pupils had stocked palm wine in the classroom and consumed it in-between lessons.

One of the children, who spoke to Kwetey revealed that she brought the palm wine to school at the request of a classmate who had paid for the alcohol.

The pupil, name withheld, told Kwetey that her parents sell palm wine and that a classmate had purchased the drink at her home and asked her to deliver it at the school.

"She came to my house and bought it. So it remained one and she told me to bring it to the class. When I brought it, she shared it."

The entire class, aged between nine and eleven years has been ordered to present themselves with their parents to sign a bond to be of good behaviour, while nine who were found to be drunk have been suspended.

Authorities at the school, however, are counselling the children in the hope of preventing such an incident from ever occurring again.

Meanwhile, the children have expressed remorse for their behaviour and promised to never drink palm wine again.
