Kumasi, Feb. 26, GNA - The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has expressed the determination to aggressively expand its distance education infrastructure and programmes to provide opportunities for more young Ghanaians to receive tertiary education at their convenience.

Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, the Vice Chancellor, said new study centres were being established across the country, to allow prospective students to pursue higher education programmes that suited their ambitions, workplace and lifestyle.

The Vice Chancellor was speaking at the Matriculation ceremony for distance education students in the northern sector in Kumasi on Thursday.

He said new programmes at the Diploma, Bachelor's and Master's levels were also being added to enable more students to undertake tertiary education of their choice.

Prof Asabere-Ameyaw said the university, which had since 1993, been at the forefront of distance education, currently had 28 study centres, and that plans were underway to open new centres at Ejisu, Ada, Damango and Bimbila and create additional ones in Kumasi and Tamale.

Four permanent structures for study centres are under construction at Techiman, Onwe, Cape Coast and Kukurantumi.

Prof Asabere-Ameyaw said new programmes had also been introduced in the 2015/16 academic year, and mentioned these as a one-year diploma in education and one-year postgraduate diploma in education by distance to cater for Higher National Diploma, technical and other professionals.
