Agona Swedru (C/R), Feb 26, GNA - Mr George Freeman, the Agona West Environmental and Sanitation Health Officer, has appealed to Ghanaians to stop throwing rubbish on the streets because Zoomlion workers would sweep.

He said throwing drinking ice water and fan ice sachets at the public places must be stopped to ensure sound environmental cleanliness.

Mr Freeman said this when he addressed the Agona West Municipal Health Directorate 2014 Annual Review performance at Agona Swedru.

He said environmental sanitation issues should be a concern of all and must not be left on the government alone to solve.

Mr Freeman said in 2014, 40 people who flouted sanitation laws were arrested and arraigned and fined between 180 and 360 Ghana cedis each.

He said the Agona West Municipal Assembly was in the process of reviewing its bye-laws on sanitation issues to help give spot fines to sanitation offenders.

Mr Freeman said 1,780 food vendors in the Municipality were medically screened and certificates issued to operate.

He expressed concern about open defecation by some residents of Agona West, adding that this had become major problem facing the Assembly.

Mr Freeman said the Assembly had made a policy that all new buildings should include toilets before permits and plans are approved.

This, he said was to encourage the residents to embrace the households toilets policy introduced by the Assembly to ease pressure on public toilet.

He said the Assembly has introduced door-to door refuse collection programme in the Municipality as part of the efforts to ensure sound environmental cleanliness.
