The Documentation and Visa Fraud (DVF) Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, has arrested 37-year-old Evans Odoi Tetteh aka Evans Danso, for allegedly using fraudulent means to collect over GH¢150,700 from unsuspecting individuals under the pretext of securing them visas.
The accused, said to be operating with others who serve as errand boys for him, purportedly charges supposed processing fees of various sums of money ranging from GH¢5,000 to GH¢6,000.
ASP Seth Sewornu, Commander of DVF, said the fraud section of the Service, between February and December 2014, received several complaints from prospective visa applicants who wanted to travel to the United States and Canada, that somebody was impersonating as a minister at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning.
The police said that the suspect put up advertisements on air and on the internet giving details of vital contacts (telephone numbers) claiming that he was capable of securing visas and work permits by means of protocol for prospective travellers to the USA and Canada.
Subsequently, a number of persons, including one Kelvin Akerson Aggrey and his group of seven other applicants, Mavis Osei, Joseph Ayiku and Martin Kwesi Antwi, sent applications to Odoi Tetteh with various sums of money to be considered for the visas.
ASP Seth Sewornu disclosed that Kelvin Akerson Aggrey and Mavis Osei, realizing that they had been defrauded by the accused, lodged a complaint with the police.
The accused person, who was being addressed as Honourable Lord and Don King - a self-acclaimed tour operator – was trailed to his Darkuman hideout where he was arrested.
Meanwhile, the commander has appealed to members of the public who might have fallen prey to the accused person's fraudulent acts to help the police with details of their encounters with him to be used as additional evidences of his alleged fraudulent deals.
He said initial investigations had been concluded and that the accused was being processed for court.
