FEB 17, 2015 LISTEN

Accra, Feb 17, GNA - Vodafone Ghana has partnered the British Council in addressing the wide expanse between male and female enrollment in Science, Mathematics and Technology related subjects in the country.

Since its inception in 2008, the telecommunications company has been at the forefront of a lot of health and educational related activities including empowering females to attain the highest levels in the science and technology fields.

A statement from Vodafone to the Ghana News Agency said the partnership with British Council will award scholarships for needy but brilliant female Junior High students interested in studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at the higher school levels.

Current statistics show that there is an increasing discontent about studying these subjects for females due to lack of encouragement and technical support.

Commenting on the initiative, Stella Agyenim- Boateng, the Director of Human Resources at Vodafone Ghana, said: 'We are passionate about female empowerment in the area of Science and Technology, seeing as we are a technologically driven company.

'Over the years, we have noticed that the number of females employed within the technology field in Ghana is disproportionate compared to their male counterparts. What this initiative seeks to do is to create an enabling environment for women to become successful in their career choices and this we continue to demonstrate through our diversity and inclusion activities.'

Addressing the media, Country Director for British Council, Liliana Biglou, said: 'We at the British Council are excited to be associated with Vodafone in this endeavour. We are prepared to facilitate a successful process in awarding deserving students who will eventually make a difference in the country'.

The scholarship package includes full tuition and administration fees as well educational tools to ensure a holistic learning experience. To qualify, the student must be resident in Ghana at the time of applying for the scholarship, demonstrate steady progression in academic work, and have an interest in studying and/or pursuing a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
