Intensive campaigns have started in the Northern Regional capital ahead of nomination of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary primaries. The Northern Regional capital Tamale, has been washed with posters of some anxious Parliamentary candidates.

The posters are visibly displayed at NPP constituency offices, party sheds and on some electricity poles in the Tamale Metropolis.

The political rivalry has already set in especially at the four major constituencies; Tamale Central, Tamale South, Tamale North and Sagnarigu.

Some nervous old Parliamentary candidates seeking re-election to contest the 2016 Parliamentary elections are making efforts to secure their popularity among the delegates. Some concerned NPP groups in Tamale have kicked against the early campaigns.

They argued that such development has the tendency of creating division among party supporters. However, the NPP Northern Regional Secretary, Sule Salifu has told citifmonline.com there was nothing wrong with the move. “As a party in this region we are not so much disturbed about these posters but one thing I will want to stress is that as a party the NPP does not believe in the imposition of candidates on any constituency,” he said.

He, however, cautioned the aspirants against character assassination and vile propaganda which could be used by their opponents against them in 2016.

“So competition is key in this party and anybody who wants to contest elections in the New Patriotic Party must first of all understand that the key principle in this party is healthy competition,” he explained. “So let us compete but we should compete with each other as friends and as the same people: we should do that with the civility that it deserves and what I am saying is that attacking each other is something we will not tolerate,” Sule Salifu stressed.
