Women in New Tafo and its surrounding communities in East Akim district of the Eastern region will now be able to deliver their babies in a safe, congenial and much comfortable environment because the Maternity Unit of the New Tafo Government Hospital has been refurbished by Tigo.

The Maternity Unit delivers about 100 babies every month from 22 surrounding communities, including Kukurantumi, Bunso, Addo-Nkwanta, Boati and Maase among others.

Before the refurbishment, the unit was in a deplorable condition with windows and louvers needing serious repairs.  The nurses also had no wardrobes to changeover and the bathroom floors was not tiled.

Also, both the newly born babies and their mothers had no insecticide treated mosquito nets even though this is highly recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to prevent newly born babies from getting Malaria.

Tigo's support will ensure that four babies are delivered safely every day and 100 pregnant women deliver in a more congenial and safe environment. Tigo also presented assorted items including toys, food items and toiletries to both the women and the new born babies.

After touring the hospital, Tigo's Chief Executive Officer, Roshi Motman, said: “For us, coming to the aid of the hospital was an opportunity to help reduce maternal and child mortality by providing a conducive environment in which mothers can have a safe delivery.”

Roshi said the refurbishment of the ward by Tigo underscored its commitment to support health delivery in deprived communities across the country. She added Tigo will extend resources to areas that will impact positively on Ghanaians.

The Medical Superintendent of New Tafo Government Hospital, Dr. Joseph Kojo Tambil and Osabarima Adusei Peasah IV, Akyem Tafohene, thanked Tigo for renovating the ward and appealed for more support for the hospital.

Osabarima Adusei called for unity among the people in the community and surrounding areas to enhance development.
