Department of Social Welfare in collaboration with the Domestic Violence Victims and Support Unit (DOVVSU) have rescued over 40 children from the Countryside Orphanage in the Central region.

The children, who were allegedly being abused by the managers of the facility, are temporarily being sheltered at the Osu Children's home.

National Coordinator of DOVVSU Chief Superintendent Lawrencia Akorli indicated that beyond the abuse the managers also sold donations which were meant for the upkeep of the children.

“We realized that they were violating the rights of the children”, she said, adding that children need to be protected but when her department looked into the situation, they determined that the children were being “deprived of the basic necessities of life”.

She added that the officials had been further engaged in corruption, saying “Donations are made for children to be fed or taken care of but here we had a situation where things are being taken onto the public domain and the children were being denied.”

She explained that her unit had no choice but to step in to do something about the situation.
