Statistical records from the Legal Department Registrar of Marriages and Divorce at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) of the Ashanti Region, point to a rather disturbing fact where a lot of divorce cases were recorded.

The Lawyer at the Legal Department Registrar of Marriages and Divorce at the KMA, Anthony Osei-Poku, disclosed this in an exclusive interview with ModernGhana in Kumasi.

He revealed that the dissolution of customary marriages in the region and declaration of customary divorce at the law court had increased at a high rate from the year 2009 through to 2014.

"The declaration of customary divorce at the law courts increased from 200 in 2009 to 268 in 2013, whiles in 2014 recorded a slight decrease to 150 last year. We also had Ordinance marriages recorded increasing from 1,664 in the year 2000 to 2,553 in 2014, whiles customary marriages also decreased from 1,340 in 2000 to 451 in 2014 last year," the lawyer disclosed.

He added that the dissolution of customary marriages from the registrar at KMA, further increased from 5 in 2007 to 21 in 2010, while it declined to 8 between 2011 and 2014.

Also, the dissolution of customary marriages at the KMA decreased from 19 in 2000 to 5 in 2007, but went up again between 2008-2010 from 14 to 21.
