A Trojan Horse, Ghana’s Bloated Voters Register!

The United States branch of Friends of Nana Akufo-Addo (FONAA-USA) unequivocally support the call by the 2016 presidential candidates of The New Patriotic Party (NPP) for a new Voters Register. The current Voters Register at best is unrealistic and at worse unscientific with all the material data available to the general public.

The recent population and housing census by the statistical commission of Ghana captured the total number of Ghana's to be 25 million. The census future indicated that about 10 million (38.96%) of the population were under the age of 14 years. Hence, 15 million citizens essentially falls within 15 years and older.

Considering the fact that, a voter's age constitutionally should be 18 years and over, it is illogical and highly questionable to have a whopping 14 million registered voters. Adjusting the figures to take into account an annual population growth rate of 2.19% and distributing it equally across all age segment still expose the credibility of the current Voters Register.

The discrepancy between the combined total of citizens who voted in the parliamentary election versus the presidential, yet again exposes the credibility of the present Voters Register.

FONAA-USA is highly convinced that the present register is bloated with ghost voters, minors (under the age of 18 years) as well as names of foreigners, particularly citizens from neighboring countries. The Ketu South and North constituencies which borders Togo had nearly 135,000 voters for NDC. We believe that, a free and fair election in 2016 depends on credible voters register. This will lead to a more transparent election and helps to maintain the peace and social stability of our beloved country.

FONAA-USA calls on the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) to heed to calls from the teaming people of Ghana including -The Christian Council, The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), The Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), IMANI-Ghana, Occupy Ghana, The European Union, various political parties and Nana Addo Danquah to see the need to audit the present Voters register before 2016 elections.

FONAA-USA calls on farmers, traders, drivers, Muslim community, student groups, teachers, labour unions as well as all citizens both home and abroad to join in the resolution to protect our peace, political stability and national unity by calling on the Electoral Commission to open a new Voter's register.

Finally, we use this opportunity to ask all Ghanaians to vote for leadership that can transform our economy, improve health care and free education.
