TEIN NDC Warns NPP To Stay Off Chairman Portuphy
16.01.2015 LISTEN

The Greater Accra branch of the Tertiary Education and Institutional Network (TEIN) of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), has asked the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stay off the newly-elected Chairman of the NDC who also doubles as the Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Kofi Portuphy.

Some members of the opposition have made calls for Kofi Portuphy to resign as NADMO Coordinator following his election as NDC Chairman.

Former NADMO Coordinator and ex-MP Isaac Amoo was the first to make that call. Current NPP MP for Tema East also followed up with similar calls. Since then, there have been a litany of such same calls from other members within the NPP.

However, in a statement in defence of Mr Portuphy, TEIN Greater Accra said: “We consider as needless, hypocritical and politically banal the calls by the NPP and its cohorts on Hon. Dr. Kofi Portuphy to resign as the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) boss following his elevation to the high office of the national chairman of the National Democratic Congress-NDC.”

“It's instructive to state emphatically that there is no such law in Ghana that prohibits him from holding that office for being the national chairman of the NDC. In any case he has been a national vice chairman of the NDC since 2010 during which period he was also the national coordinator of NADMO or was the NPP or those making these needless calls in Jupiter?” the group wondered.

According to the statement, “NADMO is alive today through the vision, experience, expertise and efficient managerial acumen of Dr. Kofi Portuphy.”

“The NPP throughout their eight years only succeeded in collapsing the organisation and it took the visionary leadership of Dr. Portuphy to resuscitate the organisation due to the enormous confidence the international community, the major sponsors of the organisation has in him. So the NPP and their cohorts should leave him alone. He has done it before and it is still evident that he is more than capable. His competence and impartiality cannot be questioned,” TEIN insisted.

It said the NPP is making the call because it has been thrown into “thrown into profuse consternation by the sterling and unparalleled achievements of the John Mahama-led government” and this “employing every means to divert the focus of the government as well as the attention of Ghanaians from the speedy progress of the better Ghana agenda of the NDC government.”
