Opinion Abu Ramadan Must Apologize
JAN 16, 2015 LISTEN

I wish to humble use this medium to call on Mr. Abu Ramadan; National Youth Organizer of the Peoples National Convention(PNC) and Leading member of the Alliance For Accountable Government (AFAG) to render an unqualified apology to the Chiefs and people of the north.

It will be recalled that on Wednesday January 7,2015 edition of point blank segment of the eyewitness news on Citifm. Mr. Abu Ramadan made comments to the effects that the upgrade of the Tamale airport into an international airport is a misplaced government priority. He further stated that the people of the north do not deserve an international airport and that it will have a better priority if the international airport was set up in the Ashanti Region. well! his comments seems to have incur the wrath of people of the north with many calling on him to render an unqualified apology to the good people of the north.

Having analyzed his comments and subsequent reactions from across various platforms including social media, I can only describe his comments as derogatory, ill thought, mischievous, frivolous, Infantile, unwarranted and unpatriotic which must be condemned in no uncertain terms. Am therefore calling on Mr. Abu Ramadan to as a matter of urgency render a well meaning and befitting apology to chiefs and people of the north for his own safety, security and integrity.

Iam also extending the same clarion call on the Leadership of the Peoples National Convention(PNC) and Alliance For Accountable Government(AFAG) to call Mr. Abu Ramadan to order or better still disassociate and distance themselves from his comments or bear consequences thereof.

Indeed, the media house on which platform those unfortunate comments were made must equally be blamed for poor monitoring and regulation. In fact media house, media owners and journalist across the globe are still mourning the recent attack on journalist in France and its devastating effects are equally still fresh in the minds of many. Readers with shark memory will recall that Radio Justice in Tamale was invended, attacked and set ablaze following comments made a panelist on a newspaper discussion.

Only GOD knows what could have happened to Abu Ramadan if he had made those comments on Tamale base radio station. So media house must ensure that they are guided by code of conduct and ethics and not allow Abu Ramadan and his likes use platform to comments that could incur the wrath of the citizenry.

Notwithstanding, the substantial topic on the center of the controversy that is the Tamale International airport is worth discussing. On September,2014 work commenced on the USD100million project to upgrade the Tamale airport into an International airport and its advantages therefore cannot be overemphasized. Aside the numerous job opportunities that comes with the project it will also promote and boost trade ,investment and tourism among sister nations like Burkina Faso,Mali,Cote D'Ivoire.

It will also open up direct foreign investment and accelerate development between Upper East Region and Upper West Region and other parts of the country. This is certainly not a misplaced priority and for someone who claim to be a northerner to have described this huge infrastructure project as a misplaced priority is most unfortunate. Am therefore calling on all well meaning Ghanaians and civil society to pledge their unflinching support for this project.

Thank You...
