Lets Heed Nduoms Advice
13.01.2015 LISTEN

N the Monday, January 5, 2015 edition of Today we carried a story on our front page which saw the 2012 flag-bearer of the Progressive People's Party (PPP,) Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, call on the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government and politicians to stop what he described as “unnecessary politics” and rather work hard to solve the myriad problems facing Ghanaians.

ACCORDING to the astute politician, Ghana can overcome her current problems if politicians who find themselves in power make Ghana their number priority in all the things they do. In fact, Dr. Nduom rightly hit the nail on the head by urging politicians to ensure that they improve the living conditions of the citizenry.

LIFE in 2014 though we do not want to revisit it was hell for majority of Ghanaians, especially the ordinary person on the street. The expectation of the people was to see an enhanced economy instead what we witnessed was an ailing one which was on the verge of collapse. What might have accounted for that bad economy is something many Ghanaians today still cannot comprehend as the economic indicators at that time were favourable.

IT is against that backdrop that we on Today think that government must heed the wise counsel of Dr. Nduom and do the right thing by putting in place pragmatic measures to resuscitate the economy. Obviously as 2016 is an election year we expect political parties in the country, including the governing party—NDC, to do some politicking here and there; sometimes at the detriment of the people to consolidate their gains.

AND this is where it makes it dangerous as the political parties tend to think about their own interest at the expense of the country. It is, however, unfortunate that in our part of the world, we vote mostly on party and tribal lines and not on issues. And that worrying phenomenon, we believe, gives room for our politicians to always deceive us since they know we cannot vote against them. It is high time that the electorate learnt a lesson from the behaviour of our politicians by demanding accountability from them any time they come to us for our votes.

INDEED, Today has said time without number that until the mindset of the leaders in this country changed we will continue to wallow in poverty and live in misery and pain. We must not lose sight of the fact that whenever there is a growing despondency in a society which often comes as a result of unemployment and hard conditions of life, the security situation becomes threatened.

WE think all these things might have informed the decision by Dr. Nduom to give such an advice to the government and politicians in the country so as to avoid the temptation of having the county plunged into chaos. It will therefore do all of us good if we can boldly reject the little offers politicians give to us during election time so that they will refrain from being selfish and greedy.
