Government disappointed in Nkonya-Alavanyo chiefs over protracted conflict

Government has expressed frustration in the protracted violence between the people of Nkonya and Alavanyo in the Volta Region.

The violence is as a result of an age-long land dispute between the two factions.

The two towns have been placed under a 14-hour curfew due to the shooting incidents that have claimed several lives. 

There is currently Police and Military presence on the ground monitoring the situation.  

But Deputy Interior Minister, James Agalga in an interview with Joy News, has charged the chiefs and residents of the towns to show more commitment to peace. 

“It doesn't make sense to resort to violence,” Mr. Agalga told Beatrice Adu at the 2014 Police Annual Dinner Ball at the Police headquarters in Accra. 

He added: “We can resolve the Alavanyo [and Nkonya] conflict through amicable ways so I am urging the chiefs and people of Alavanyo [and Nkonya] to give peace a chance in the coming year so that together we can develop Alavanyo and Nkonya”. 

He said his “Ministry will work very closely with the National Security and the Regional Security Council” in the coming year to find a lasting resolution to the long drawn-out conflict.  

“We are not happy with the way and manner the people of Alavanyo and Nkonya have conducted themselves. But government is not throwing its hands in despair; the Peace Council continues to prevail itself upon the warring factions to understand that the way to go is not violence.
