President John Mahama is urging feuding factions in Bawku protracted conflict to return to the negotiating table and commit to finding a lasting peace.

Yesterday, there was sporadic shooting at Bawku. And President Mahama who was in the Upper East Region to celebrate the Samanpiid festival described as unacceptable that Bawku, once vibrant trading town, is now pale shadow of its former self.

With its agricultural products and other finished products, he said for instance, the town could have taken advantage of the ECOWAS trade protocol to become the “most commercially prosperous town” in the whole of Ghana.

“Sadly, today, as a result of persistent communal and ethnic conflicts, Bawku is a pale shadow of itself, our children education is in jeopardy,” he lamented.

Teachers and other professional prefer to work in other places other than Bawku, he observed.

President Mahama said the conflicts have had negative impact on the area. Lives have been lost, government had to invest “huge sums of money” to maintain security in the area, he said.

He said even though chiefs from the area assured him that the inter-ethnic peace council would be revived, “unfortunately this assurance which was given to me is yet to be realized”.

He appealed to parties in the conflicts to return to the inter-ethnic peace committee to ensure that peace return to Bawku.
