Five members of a notorious vigilante group at Ofoase in the Eastern region have been arrested by the Police.

The suspected Islamic group operating in Akyem Ofoase Zongo is noted for flogging residents who breach certain requirements of the religion.

The area is said to be a predominantly Muslim community. 

The group is also reported to have adopted the name of the notorious Islamic terrorist group in Nigeria Boko Haram.

In a video, the group members were seen flogging a woman for allegedly buying from a Christian.

Security officials in the Eastern Region have arrested three of the group's members.

Police Public Relations officer in the Eastern Regional ASP Nketiah Yeboah said they are now screening the suspects.

"Some are tribal chiefs, some are religious leaders and imams who we can now say for sure are leading this unlawful, dastardly acts.

"Everybody should be reminded that nobody, no matter the status in society has the power to promulgate laws or issue punishments to people at his or her own caprices.

He appealed to the public to assist by giving out information that will lead to the arrest of people involved in such vigilante acts.

Nketiah Yeboah said victims and  relatives of the such heinous acts should also be bold enough to report such acts to the police for quick action to be taken.
