The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL)) says it will charge estate developers and landlords to lay pipelines in Adenta and other parts of the capital.

The estate developers and landlords are expected to bear the cost of laying distribution lines to guarantee the flow of water to residents in their respective areas.

Chief Manager in charge of Public Relations at the GWCL, Michael Agyemang says estate developers and landlords would have to pay for the laying of distribution lines before they can benefit.

“We are going to work with the estate developers, landlord associations and the various communities and pre-finance the laying of lines to their areas and charge them accordingly.”

He said about $48 million has been made available by Government through the World Bank to help support the project.

President John Mahama on Tuesday opened the pumps at the Kpong Water Plant for 20 million gallons of water to be supplied to Adenta and several other parts of Accra.

The first phase of the project has been completed and residents are expected to have their taps flowing with water by the end of the week.

The President at a tour to inspect the site with the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Sun Baohong on Tuesday, hinted that there would be uninterrupted water supply for residents in the area.

Mr Agyemang, however, says it will be difficult to tell when the places without water in the capital will have water even after the commissioning of the Kpong water project.

“It is difficult to say when they [those complaining] will get water but we are monitoring but it is difficult because some areas do not have pipelines and others have gone rusty it is difficult to say when they will get water.”

He also blamed the difficulty in getting water to those areas on the topographical location of the areas making it difficult where the complaints are coming in order that the appropriate measures are taken to help them.
