General News 4 Gunned At Asokore Palace
DEC 24, 2014 LISTEN

Four persons, comprising three young women and a man, suffered various degrees of injuries on their legs when a woman believed to be in her late 40s mistakenly fired gunshots into a crowd at the Asokore palace near Koforidua in the Eastern Region on Monday evening.

The crowd was making merry during the installation of the Twafuohene.

The woman who was later identified as the Twafuohemaa of Asante-Asokore, Nana Yaa Saka, has since been arrested and caged by the regional police command.

The four whose names are not readily known were rushed to the St Joseph's Hospital at Efiduase.

The Twafuohene, Nana Gyima Asare I, who is known in private life as Samson Asare, had barely arrived to swear the oath of allegiance to Nana Antwi Panin II, Asokorehene, at about 5:30pm when the incident happened.

Enthusiasts were following the Twafuohene amidst drumming, singing and dancing at the forecourt of the palace when Nana Yaa Saka in display of bravery fired two shots of ammunition in the air.

A third cartridge fell from her pocket and she picked it and put it in the single barrel gain.

Her finger was presumably on the trigger so before she could lift the gun up, she accidentally fired into the crowd, hitting four people on their legs and knees.

A source at the regional police headquarters said the woman was helping with investigations into the matter.

The four have since been treated and discharged.
