Africa Ghanaian Named Part Of AJ+ Global Network Of Up-And-Coming Journalists
DEC 23, 2014 LISTEN

The AJ+ Global Engagers Program is an exciting opportunity for a handful of young, international journalists to join AJ+, Al Jazeera's recently launched digital-only news channel targeted at a new generation of digital natives. In this yearlong program, the Global Engagers will be the eyes and ears of AJ+ on the ground, working remotely from their home regions and in daily contact with the team in San Francisco.

They will be tapping into uncovered stories quietly coursing through their communities, pitching these stories to the AJ+ team, and engaging in online and offline conversations in their regions as representatives of AJ+.

Ghanaian Sandister Tei is the only African in the network. She recently finished her master's in international journalism at the Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies. In her spare time, she volunteers with the Wikimedia Ghana User Group, a group she co-founded in order to discover and engage with other Ghanaian Wikimedians.

She's excited about joining the AJ+ team because "most importantly, AJ+ listens. That's why I am here to engage Sub-Sahara, because AJ+ is interested in stories from all areas that need to be told. I can't imagine being anywhere else but on this team."

Over 1,700 people from around the world applied to be part of the first class of AJ+ Global Engagers. After a lengthy and thorough selection process that included two rounds of applications, personal interviews, and individual recommendations, the AJ+ team pared down the initial 1,700 applicants to a cohort of eight highly qualified Global Engagers. The Global Engagers represent six world regions, and each will be responsible for covering current affairs for the region in which they live: North America, Central & South America, Europe, Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia Pacific.

“The Global Engagers program will help AJ+ achieve its vision of creating authentic, one-to-one relationships between our journalists and the global community,” said Raja Sharif, strategy and development manager at AJ+. “We think of the Global Engagers program as an opportunity for AJ+ to empower the next generation of journalism leaders."
