NDC handed to disaster managers - Nana Akomea
22.12.2014 LISTEN

Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea says the election of Kofi Porturphy as Chairman for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is in an attempt to rescue the governing party from failure.

According to the spokesperson for the opposition party, delegates of the party voted for people who are experts in managing disasters because of the failures of the John Mahama-led administration.

Delegates of the NDC at the Babayara Sports Stadium over the weekend, elected Kofi Porturphy, the National Coordinator for National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) as their national chairman. They also voted for Mr. Porturphy's deputy, Anita Desoso as a vice-chairperson for the party.

“Essentially, the party has been handed over for disaster management people to salvage,” Nana Akomea told Kojo Yankson, host of the Super Morning Show on Joy FM, Monday, December 22, 2014.

Kofi Adams, Spokesperson for former president Jerry John Rawlings, was overwhelmingly endorsed as National Organiser in place of Yaw Boateng Gyan, who until Saturday, December 20, 2014, held that position.

But speaking on the Super Morning Show on Joy FM, Nana Akomea said the NPP is not troubled about the outcome of the NDC delegates' congress. He said the NPP will focus on its campaign strategy to ensure it wins the 2016 general elections.

“We have no reason to be perturbed. At the end of the day, what is important to us is the performance of the government and our [NPP's] ability to limit electoral manipulations…to ensure that the ballot is largely free from fraud”.

Porturphy's luck
In a related development, Political Analyst, Dr. Seidu Alidu says the NDC's new chairman must see himself lucky to have a team that has a blend of energetic youth and experienced 'veterans'.

This according to the Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon, should make Mr. Porturphy's work “very easy” in the run-up to the elections.

“It is a huge combination of both new young active crop of leaders compared with old experienced crop of leaders,” he observed.

Dr. Alidu foresees the NDC's leadership becoming a “formidable team” that has a representation of and interest of the various groups in the party.

However, this could prove to be disastrous if Mr. Porturphy fails to unite the rungs of winning candidates and also bring onboard candidates who lost their positions at congress, to serve the general interest of the party.

“Because if these individuals who constitute the team don't serve the collective interest of the party but want to project the [perceived] interests of the individuals they represent…it's going to create a huge log of disunity,” the analyst noted.
