Parental Neglect On Increase
19.12.2014 LISTEN

Padmore Baffuor Agyapong
The Head of the Ashanti Regional Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), DSP Benjamin Dokurugu, has disclosed the high rate of parental neglect in the region.

Giving statistics to buttress his claim, he said, 'In 2012, a total of 165 kids were left unattended to by their parents, while 866 in 2013 suffered similar fate in the region.'

Sounding peeved about the situation, he noted that 'most of the children interviewed either faced physical, sexual, economic, emotional and verbal abuses from their care givers and parents.'

He, therefore, called on the public to report any parent who is fond of starving or dehumanising children or maidservants to help in reducing the upsurge in stray children on the streets.

He was speaking at a special stakeholders and media interaction event in Kumasi organised by Compassion International-Ghana, where issues of stray children were thoroughly discussed.

Padmore Baffuor Agyapong, Country Director, Compassion International-Ghana, tasked the church and the media to play leading roles to ensure that homeless children who roam on the streets are well catered for.

He disclosed that 'because of the church's presence in almost every community in the country, their partnership with the media who are the wheels of providing information could lead to the needy in society being reached with help, notably, education.'

Compassion International-Ghana has constructed 20 boreholes, 20 KVIPs and 10 schools in the country geared towards making life better and enjoyable for the needy in society.
