Societe Generale, one of the leading banks in Ghana, has pledged its commitment to support the national sanitation agenda to promote a clean and healthy environment

In view of that, it has donated sanitation equipment worth over GH¢18,000 to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development.

The items which included wheel barrows, rakes, brushes, T-shirts, pick-axes, among others, were to help the ministry to undertake its environmental cleanliness.

Emmanuel K. Agyekum, a Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, who received the items commended the bank for its faithfulness.

He appealed to other institutions to support in kind and in cash to ensure the success of the sanitation agenda.

The Managing Director for Societe Generale Ghana, Gilbert Hie, affirmed the bank's support for the national sanitation agenda by the ministry.

He said, 'SG-Ghana, in line with its group, adopts and respects the values and principles in international law, human rights laws and sustainable development for the protection of the physical, social, cultural and economic environment within which it operates.

'In this vain SG-Ghana carefully manages the environmental and social impacts of its own consumption by consistently monitoring and minimising the direct impact of the bank's activities on the environment.'

Julius Debrah, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, commended the bank for its support over the years and affirmed government's support for the banking industry.

He entreated banks to support the campaign to ensure that its goals for a cleaner environment are met.

Societe Generale Ghana on Saturday December 6, 2014 participated in the nationwide clean-up exercise.

Over 200 of the bank's staff from the head office in Accra and others branches undertook a massive clean-up exercise in Kokomlemle, Accra.
