18.12.2014 LISTEN

Johnny Osei Kofi, Deputy Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, today on behalf of his Minister, cautioned residents in parts of the capital to secure their water taps or risk flooding their houses.

He assured that the scarcity of water in places like Haatso, Madina, Ashalebotwe, Ashongman, North, West and East Legon etc will soon be a thing of the past.

Speaking at today's government for the people forum, the deputy minister assured the general public of the completion of ongoing works at the Kpong Waterworks and promised residents living in and around those areas that water will be available in the next few days.

Water, he said, is a good servant but can be a very naughty master. He thus warned persons who are in the habit of forgetting to switch off their taps to beware.

"If you are in that habit, within a few hours to a few days, you will come back from work or wake up in the night and your Christmas carpet will be wet. Your house will be flooded because your water will run”.

Mr Osei Kofi assured the residents that soon “You are going to have enough water”.

He informed the public that dilapidated pipes which have been in existence since colonial times will soon be replaced hinting, a different success story will be told by next year.

Mr Osei Kofi also cautioned persons who illegally connect to tap water sources in a bid to avoid paying bills for the commodity to stop or they will be dealt with under the law.

Touching on the water situation in Teshie, Mr Osei Kofi said that the area will soon have a backup water supply.

"This time, we are not taking water from the Volta [river], we are taking water from the sea," he said.

He revealed that a desalination project is currently being tested out to convert salty sea water into potable water, adding that the system will be reserved as a backup for periods of drought.
