The victim
A 23-year-old mother who allegedly dumped her four-month-old baby at a refuse dump at Kpando-Gabi in the Volta Region, has been arrested by the Kpando police.

The young lady, who was arrested yesterday morning, has been identified as Amdala Ismaila, unemployed.

This was confirmed by the Kpando District Police Commander, Superintendent Godfrey Tetteh Adjirakor.

He told DAILY GUIDE that investigations had started and that details would be made available later.

Sources at Kpando said Amdala is a resident of Sovie, a community near   Kpando-Gabi. The sources said she was arrested after co-tenants in her house raised alarm over the whereabouts of her child.

They said yesterday (Wednesday) morning, she was seen packing her things and informing the co-tenants that she was traveling to Accra. They then inquired of the whereabouts of the baby whom she claimed was with a friend.

However, after news started filtering in about a dumped baby, they raised an alarm, arrested her and sent her to the Kpando Police Station.

The Kpando District Police Commander explained that the four-month-old baby is currently under medical care at the Margaret Marquart Hospital at Kpando after she was discovered and rescued from a public garbage container last Tuesday night.

Supt. Adjirakor said the baby was discovered around 7:20 pm by a Good Samaritan who had gone to dump garbage at the refuse dump. After dumping her refuse, she said she heard some noise like a baby crying.

She curiously checked the refuse container where the sound was emanating from and found the baby tied in a polythene bag. She quickly un-wrapped her and sent her to the Margaret Marquart Hospital.

Nurses at the hospital told DAILY GUIDE that the baby was in good condition. The mother could be charged with attempted murder, according to Ghana's laws.
