DCOP Awuni Angwubutoge interacting with MTTU commanders after the meeting

DCOP Awuni Angwubutoge, the Director-General in-charge of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service, has accused Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) personnel at Nima, Adenta and Madina stations of unprofessional conduct.

He said police personnel at the said stations were fond of collecting bribes and called on their commanders to check those deployed to control traffic on the roads.

'MTTD has received several complaints of police officers extorting monies from unsuspecting drivers under the guise of spot fines and driving while using communication devices.

This menace has even been captured on video and circulating on the various social media even though the spot fine has not yet commenced.'

He made this known during a meeting with all MTTU commanders in Accra and Tema at the police headquarters yesterday.

He urged the commanders to ensure that personnel deployed for traffic duties do not extort money from any person, adding that those found culpable would be dealt with by the police administration.

DCOP Awuni called on the public to challenge police officers, who unlawfully arrest them and try to extort monies from them or report their conduct to PIPS.

Congestion
Touching on congestion within the cities, especially during this festive season, DCOP Awuni urged commanders to deploy personnel to check traffic flow in all intersections.

'Areas such as CMB, Graphic Road, Old Parliament House, Mallam, Odorkor, etc known to be traffic prone areas must be particularly dealt with and drivers prevented from parking recklessly.

He directed all commanders not to allow civilians to direct traffic within their jurisdictions.

According to him, 'No commander should allow unauthorized people carrying tree branches to direct traffic at intersections within their jurisdictions. Commanders in whose jurisdictions this is carried out will be held liable for any lapse.'

It is the duty of the commanders to always go round to make sure that personnel deployed to check traffic flow are at post and do the work effectively.

'Headquarters will also have a monitoring team who will also go round to make sure that commanders deploy their men to work at intersections effectively.

Okada Riders
Touching on the activities of Okada riders, DCOP Awuni hinted that even though their activity is illegal in the country, it was disheartening to hear that some police officers patronize their services.

Some of the motor riders even ride without protective crash helmets and the requisite license but police personnel look on unconcerned, he added.

He urged the MTTU commanders to make sure that their men do the right thing on the road by taking action against those who flout the law.
