Where Is The PURC And Government? Dissolve The Board Now—IPP Demands
17.12.2014 LISTEN

Independent Peoples Party is calling on the Public Utility Regulatory Commission – (PURC) and John Mahama's government to act immediately to address the erratic power supply which is seriously destroying Ghanaian businesses. The PURC board should be dissolved NOW for non-performance.

This year alone under John Mahama NDC Government, electricity prices are up 47% and water prices are up 26%. Since 2012, the average household is paying GH650 extra per year for their electricity and water.

The consumer has paid for all this increase, but where is the electricity?

The role of the Public Utility Regulatory Commission – (PURC) is to protect the interests of consumers but I have seen zero evidence of this over the past number of years. The PURC is only interested in fixing upward energy prices.

I have received no credible reason for electricity and water prices in Ghana not decreasing in line with dumso - dumso. The PURC is not performing an essential role in protecting hard-pressed consumers who now face unfair upwards adjustment electricity and water charges in January.

The PURC maintains its hands are tied and it cannot directly involve itself in overseeing the continuous power supply to consumers. Independent Peoples Party is calling the PURC to be more proactive in ensuring consumers receive value for money for their energy. The PURC should be seen as demanding the energy suppliers to stream electricity without interruptions.

The PURC cannot be allowed to operate only in fixing upward price adjustments, it should carry out its function properly to ensure customers receive power nonstop.
