By Elder Alex Barning

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, preceding the Birth of JESUS CHRIST, has been celebrated at the Ghanaian Presbyterian Church in Toronto, Canada.

The Men's Fellowship of the Church read the first lesson from Genesis 3: 8-15 and sang a Carol. The gist of it was “God announces in the Garden of Eden that the seed of woman shall bruise the serpent's head.” The Women's Fellowship followed with the second reading which was taken from Genesis 22: 15-18. “God promises to Faithful Abraham that in his seed the nations of the earth shall be blessed with Kings and Kingdoms.”

The third lesson from the Book of Isaiah 9: 2, 6-7 was read by the Young People's Guild (YPG), which forecast the Christ's Birth and His Kingdom. Bobie-Ansah Sisters, backed by the Church Band, sang Carols as an interlude.

The Children's Service took over the fourth lesson and read from Micah 5: 2-4, which said “The Peace that Christ will bring is foreshown”. The Blessed Children's Choir of the church sang the Carol. The Young Adult Fellowship (YAF) followed it with the fifth lesson and read from the Gospel According to Saint Luke 1: 26-38. It states “The Angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary that she has found favour with God”.

The Junior Young (JY) and the Church Band read from Luke 2: 1-7 and Luke 2: 8-16 respectively. The JY said “St. Luke tells of the Birth of Jesus” while the Church Band came up with “the Shepherds go to the Manger.'

The eighth Lesson from the Gospel according to St. Matthew 2: 1-11 was read by the Singing Band and it stated that “The Wise Men are led by the star to Jesus.” To crown it all, the Session read the Ninth Lesson from the John's Gospel 1: 1-14 which said “John unfolds the great mystery of the incarnation”.

Summing it up, the Resident Pastor Rev. Raymond Baah-Abekah said Jesus Christ is the light that darkness could not comprehend it. He said the Birth of Christ is a special time God gave to humanity and it is a time for everybody to give to mankind.
