The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region is gearing up to demonstrate against the Electricity Company of Ghana's prepaid meter replacement exercise next week.

Regional Chairman of the party Bernard Antwi Boasiako who announced the demonstration alleged that the exercise is an attempt by the Mahama-led administration to milk people in the region.

He accused government of consistently bringing substandard items to people in the region and charged residents to reject the meters.

Mr Boasiako alleged that the meters have been tampered with hence consumers will be paying more for what they consume.

But speaking to Luv FM's Erastus Asare Donkor, Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer Erasmus Baidoo said the NPP has been misinformed.

He said “they have not seen the meters themselves and do not know the utility of the meter and for that matter whatever they must have been told is misplaced.”

Mr Baidoo said the company has conducted tests and run a pilot programme on the meters and is confident that it will serve a better purpose than the postpaid.

He said it was unfortunate for the NPP to accuse the company of thievery when it is rather seeking to reduce consumers' cost and give them the opportunity to regulate their electricity usage.

Meanwhile some residents in the region who were on the pilot programme commended the ECG for the meters.

They said they are paying less and are able to control their consumption to prevent incurring excessive costs.
