She was sick, diagnosed of HIV and her world came crashing down. She was perplexed; lived in denial and hopped from one herbalist to another; from one prayer camp to another in a desperate search for spiritual healing.

That healing never came. She was a mother of one and her situation was not getting any better.

For three years she was in a state of denial until a friend challenged her to give her daughter a chance by accepting her status and taking her medication.

It has been 11 years now and while still living with the deadly HIV virus, Gifty Torkornu Degbe is living an extremely happy life.

As the world celebrates AIDS day today, Gifty shared her chilling yet inspiring story about HIV/AIDS with Joy News and just how, against all formidable odds, she managed to subdue the biggest storm of her life.

She is now married to a man who tested negative for HIV and they live quite a normal life-just like any other couple.

She told Joy News' Dzifa Bampoh she is no longer lonely because her better half complements her in many unimaginable ways.

The couple is now looking forward to having a baby, a situation which Gifty said was perfectly possible.

She said the 'biggest danger' for an HIV patient is 'not to accept your status' because when you accept your status you begin to take good care of yourself.

World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have succumbed to the disease.
