Fidelity Bank, a leading financial institution, in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), will soon introduce a sanitation model to help households, house owners and individuals to own toilets.

This was made known during a meeting between the Managing Director of the Bank, Edward Effah and the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), Julius Debrah at the bank's headquarters in Accra yesterday.

The initiative, which is part of the ministry's Small and Micro Business Sanitation Model, is expected to help individuals and households construct toilets in their homes or an agreed upon location.

The Minister explained that the introduction of the model is to prevent some Ghanaians from defecating openly in unauthorized places.

He explained further that interested individuals would have to apply through their respective Metropolitan Municipal and District assemblies (MMDAs) for consideration and approval to the bank which would serve as the financing agency for the construction of the project.

The Minister added that the toilets to be provided under the scheme would not in any way pose a threat to neighbours.'

Mr Effah, in a remark, said the proposal, which would present good prospects for the bank, conforms to the institution's corporate social responsibility of ensuring that the environment within which they operate promotes the health of the people.

He assured the minister that once the document on the Sanitation Model had been finalized, the bank would expedite action to define that mechanisms and terms of references needed for the project to be rolled out in the country.

He said beneficiaries would pay the loan in a reasonable period of time.
