The National petroleum Authority (NPA) on Wednesday began a three-day operation in Kumasi to clamp down on the activities of unlicensed fuel stations in the downstream petroleum sector.

Police personnel, who assisted the NPA in the exercise, apprehended three people, including a female at areas such as Dompoase-Aprabo, Kaasi and Atonsu-Agogo, all in Kumasi.

Their names were given as Ramatu Abdulla, Nana Owusu Acheampong and one Nimoh aka Sean Paul.

The NPA officials and the security agents also retrieved drums of petroleum products, particularly diesel, from the suspects during the special operation.

Head of Public Relations and Consumer Service Unit of NPA, Yaro Kasanbata told the media that the activities of the unlicensed fuel stations in the downstream petroleum sector violate Sections 11, 32 and 61(2) of the NPA Act 205 [Act 691].

'We have observed the trend of people selling petroleum products on table tops and in Q bottles, which are springing up across the country, and we have resolved to clamp down on it before it gets out of hand,' he stated.

It is unlawful for people to engage in commercial activities in the downstream sector without a license, but that this does not affect those engaging in the peddling of kerosene, according to him.

He intimated that the move was to sanitize the system, adding that the products were hazardous and required proper management to maintain standards.

'We have identified a number of places across the country, and this exercise will be replicated to bring the development down,' he noted.

He called on the public to assist the authority to weed out recalcitrant individuals from the system, noting that NPA would work with the law enforcement agencies to apply the necessary sanctions.
