General News Power cut: K.T. Hammond incites residents to demonstrate but
NOV 21, 2014 LISTEN

The Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, K.T. Hammond is asking residents, who feel the incessant power cuts are becoming unbearable, to mass up and demonstrate to press for better service instead of damaging ECG installations.

The nation is experiencing one of the worst power crises for many years due to inadequate generation. Authorities have attributed it to the piecemeal natural gas supply from Nigeria and lowering level of water at the various hydro dams.

As a result, power distributor, Electricity Company of Ghana, announced a load shedding exercise it is struggling to follow.

Residents are therefore not guaranteed planned power supply, disrupting several activities.

Angered by the fluctuating power supply, some residents across the country have resorted to some lawless acts destroying property, especially at ECG installations.

Yesterday, residents of Airport Roundabout in Kumasi attacked ECG over the persistent power cuts in their area.

Last week, some residents of Tabora and Odokor here in Accra blocked roads and vandalized property following days of no light.

But K.T. Hammond admonished them, “you do not get anything by destroying” installations, you rather “take a retrogressive step”.

The youth must act lawfully, he advised them to sit down with the police and plan any action they want to adopt to register their displeasure about the disturbing issue.

“I am pleading with you, calm down, arrange with the police administration go out in your numbers, demonstrate to the government to realise the problems facing you,” he said

The current power crisis should be blamed on the government because it is unwilling to provide logistical support to solve the power problem, Mr. Hammond asserted.

Meanwhile, DCOP David Ampah-Beninn Director of Police Public Affairs said the problem is national, of which cause has been explained to all, and therefore warned against attacks on ECG installations because they are “uncalled for”.

He said it is the duty of the police to protect national installations including those of ECG, and promised to live up to that responsibility. Story by Ghana | Myjoyonline.com| Isaac Essel | [email protected] | twitter @isaacessel
