Labour unions hit streets over Tier-2 pensions

Members of the 12 labour unions battling government over the management of their Tier-2 Pension funds have hit the streets this morning to protest government's handling of the matter.

The workers last month declared a strike demanding government hands over the money to their chosen scheme managers.

Government secured a court order forcing an end to the strike.

But the workers remain resolute and have been on the streets.

The demonstrations are ongoing in Accra and the Ashanti Regional capital of Kumasi.

In Accra, JoyNews reporter Kwakye Afreh Nuamah is following the action.

He reported the 250 workers as saying they will fight until they get some results.

The workers are opposed to a decision by government to choose a private trustee, Pension Alliance Trust, to oversee the management of their Tier-2 Pension contributions.

Some of the placards carried by the protesters read: "Allow the law to work," "Stop doing 'kpakpakpa' with our pensions”, "Mahama, do you want to eat with your hands and feet at the same time?" "Allow our private schemes to operate", "Who is behind Pension Trust?"

From Kumasi, Nhyira FM's Ohemeng Tawiah, reported that demonstrators refused to present a petition to the Ashanti Regional Minister Samuel Sarpong, contrary to initial plans.

He reported the Minister as expressing disappointment at the behaviour of the protesters.

But leaders of the protest, said they are entitled to decide whether or not to present a petition when they demonstrate.
