350 G-ROC To Hold The First Biggest Ever Street Carnival On Climate Change

15th November, 2014 (from 4pm till you drop) is the D-day and time set aside finally for the biggest ever and the first in its kind street carnival on climate change to climax the Global Power Shift (GPS) project in the history of Ghana.

350. Ghana Reduce our carbon (G-ROC), the climate change youth activist group are poised to hit the street of Accra with the reawakening message of hope on promotion and use of clean renewable, sustainable source of energy against coal-powered plant.

The well planned street carnival event which is massively calling for the attention of Ghanaians on how to save the climate from destruction is jointly being organized by 350 G-ROC, and PLUZZ FM 89.9 a local based commercial FM station in Accra.

The thought provoking yet colourful entertainment night event will saw thousands of youths converging at the Osikan football field in Accra off Accra High Street, close to the enterprise Insurance building to witness the sizzling performances of music celebrities like Yaa Pono, Shatta Rako, Sean Taylor,Buddaman,sample star, Rashid Metal and many more as they perform and send out clear messages on the adoption and usage of clean renewable and sustainable energy as the only alternative to solving Ghana's energy problem rather than coal-powered plant.

Government has decided to establish a coal plant to augment the shortfall in the energy generation and distribution. This is unfortunate came at a time nations such as Denmark, UK, China and the likes are doing away with fossil fuel and committing to building of renewable and sustainable energy such as windmills and solar energy.

The use of coal to produce energy is regarded globally as dangerous to the activities of mankind and the society in general. Several research conducted by many organizations shows that coal particulates pollution cause approximately one million deaths annually across the world.

Eliminating coal and fossil fuel have been major concerns to the fight against climate change and global warming is the potential huge increase in Ghana's Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions resulting from the proposed development of the coal fired power plant.

Currently Ghana is said to be emitting about 24 mega tonnes of carbon dioxide a year into the atmosphere and developing a coal fired power station will certainly compromise the state of the environment in West Africa.

Therefore the youth activist group (350 G-ROC) intends using the carnival platform to educate the public and also urge the government to focus on renewable energy such as wind and solar energy.

Following the Youth Forum and a Rally organized on the 16th of August by 350 G-ROC under the Global Power Shift (GPS) phase two projects which took place in Komfueku Community in Sekondi -Takoradi at the Western Region which saw thousands of youth sensitized on the dangers of coal-powered plant and the need for renewable/clean energy technology choices which don't pose a threat to environment and also human health.

“This street carnival will focus on the same agenda and will create awareness on how we can cultivate the use of renewable and a sustainable source of energy and to warn the government that establishing a coal-powered plant is not an option for our energy crisis” Ezekiel Chibeze, Coordinator of 350 G-ROC has said.

He noted, “Clean, renewable source of energy does not only guarantee regular energy provision but has inherent job creation opportunities for majority of unemployed or under-employed youth”.

The street carnival event is said to be climaxing 350 G-ROC's Global Power Shift (GPS) phase two projects which 350.org, a mother organization in USA is funding to help Ghana reduce on its carbon emission geared towards saving the mother earth planet on climate change.

About 188 countries are equally beneficiaries of the grant under the Global Power Shift project which is the biggest and the largest global climate movement in the world today.

Farid Shamsu-Deen, communication Director of the group noted the street carnival event is aimed at sensitizing the national public on the dangers of coal generation and stresses on renewable and sustainable energy.

“It is going to be a night of sonorous music characterized by poetry recitals, drama, hilarious comedy, documentary and many other interesting activities sending a clear signal revolving around the key message encapsulated in “Say no to coal, say yes to renewable energy “ as the theme for the event” Farid has emphasized.

350 G-ROC is a grassroots movement formed with the aim of mobilizing and empowering young people in partnership with key stakeholders to actively champion the need to reduce carbon emissions as a key effort in combating climate change under the global power shift project (GPS) phase 2 and has been working assiduously towards the reduction of Ghana's carbon emission since the commencement of the GPS project in Ghana.
