Unimax Macmillan assists physically challenge

Cape Coast, June 30, GNA - Unimax Macmillan, Publishers of books on Wednesday donated three wheel chairs worth 12 million cedis to three physically challenged persons at a ceremony in Cape Coast.

The recipients who are all crippled are Mr King Abebrese, a 52-year-old Craft Instructor of Nyankumase-Ahenkro Primary School in the Assin District, Miss Abena Quainoo, an 11-year-old school pupil of Korado Primary School and Master Alfred Tawiah also a 17-year JSS pupil of Asomdwe JSS both in the Abora-Asebu-Kwamankese District.

Presenting the chairs, Mr Samson Gyampoh, Sales Manager of Unimax Macmillan Limited said his company was delighted to be associated with attempts by the Central Regional directorate of the Ghana Education Service to lessen the burden of the physically challenged.

He expressed the hope that the chairs would alleviate the suffering of the recipients and also help them to get to their schools in time as was previously the case.

The Sales Manager said the best form of investment was in human development, adding that it was in this regard that the company was assisting the GES to provide quality education in the region.

Mr Gyampoh commended Ms Barbara Abban, Regional Coordinator of GirlChild Education for submitting a good proposal which led to the identification of the three physically challenged persons and urged her to continue the good work..

Mrs Justina Dorjagbor, Regional Director of GES, in a welcome address stressed the need to support the physically challenged to develop their talent in order to become self-reliant.

She stated that it was a civic duty on everybody to assist the government in the provision of facilities to train the physically challenged to acquire employable skills.

Mr Karikari Apau, Asebu District Chief Executive regretted that the Region that used to be at the forefront of education was lagging behind and expressed gratitude to the company for its efforts to give assistance to the Region.

In a related development, the company also donated assorted books valued at 15.6 million cedis to the Regional Directorate of the GES and the Regional Centre for National Culture while a cheque of 10 million cedis was also donated to the GES to finance activities of the awards ceremony of the 2004 Regional Reading Competition for first and second cycle schools scheduled for October.
