Condoms not the best to prevent HIV/AIDS - DCE

Ajumako-Mando (C/R), June 30, GNA - The District Chief Executive for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam, Mr Kenneth Obimpong, on Tuesday advised Ghanaians not to rely on the use of condom as the most effective preventive method against HIV/AIDS.

Rather, complete abstention from pre-marital sex is the best solution of the problem, he added.

Mr Obimpong said this when opening a day's HIV/AIDS sensitization and Peer Educators workshop at Ajumako-Mando Secondary-Technical School in the Central Region.

About 150 Peer Educators drawn from communities in the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam district attended the workshop, which was organized by the International Christian Association for Rural Evangelism (ICARE), a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).

Mr Obimpong expressed grave concern about the huge sums of money the government was spending on the pandemic, "yet some people do not take serious view about its existence."

He said this year the Assembly would encourage ten people from the district to undertake Voluntary Counseling and Testing for people to know their HIV status. 30 June 2004
