Ouagadougou (AFP) - A group of Burkina Faso army officers said Friday said they had "taken the destiny of the nation in hand" and were closing the west African country's borders hours after deposed President Blaise Compaore fled the capital.

"The civilian and armed forces have decided to take the destiny of the nation in hand," said Lieutenant-Colonel Isaac Yacouba Zida, in a signed statement issued from Camp Guillaume Ouedraogo.

Earlier the country's army chief Navere Honore Traore had declared that he had assumed power.
