The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Ghana Medical and Dental Council, has apprehended a 45-year-old man who claimed to be a medical doctor and offered treatment to unsuspecting persons at Tema.

The suspect, David Asare Darko, according to police reports, dispensed drugs to his patients who visited his small clinic at the Tema European Market near the fishing harbour for the past six years.

The police discovered his dubious activities and apprehended him with the help of the Ghana Medical and Dental Council.

Items found of him included pharmaceutical drugs believed to be inferior, a stethoscope and other medical equipment.

The suspect is being held at the CID headquarters assisting in police investigations.

Briefing the media, the Director-General in the CID, COP Prosper Kwame Abglor said the arrest was made on Friday, October 24, 2014 at Tema by the police in collaboration of the Ghana Medical and Dental Council.

Police received information from some persons that the suspect had turned his chemical shop into a clinic and was practicing medicine and dentistry in Tema.

The Ghana Medical and Dental Council was called in to check suspect's background.

Checks later revealed that the suspect was a dispensing technician, who was not even registered as a medical practitioner under the health professional's regulatory bodies Act.

Investigations revealed that the said chemical store had not been licensed.

Other unregistered drugs were handed over to the Authority for analysis.

Asare Darko would be arraigned before court soon.
