Ayikoi Otoo advocates for conflict resolution mechanisms to resolve strike actions in the country

A former Attorney General, Joseph Nii Ayikoi Otoo has advocated for the setting up of a conflict resolution mechanism in the country as a means of dealing with the daily quagmire of strike actions and labour agitations.

This follows the countless number of labour related disputes in recent years. The latest being the indefinite strike action embarked on by the workers has left critical aspects of the economy being abandoned by workers in the public sector.

This latest strike by the workers borders on the management of their tier two pension funds, as they want government to relinquish control of the fund to them, something government is unwilling to do.

It has subsequently filed a suit at the law courts, seeking an interpretation of aspects of the Pensions Act and wants a pronouncement from the court on whether it is the employer to these workers and whether it has the right or not to select a fund manager to manage the tier two pension scheme.

But Mr Ayikoi Otoo believes such a resolution mechanism will better resolve all disputes that will arise in the country.

“Conflicts are bound to come, but all we need to do is have a conflict resolution mechanism in place. There is not much we can say, you cannot say that nobody can have conflict, then it means we are not living in this world, so we should have such a mechanism to help deal with the conflicts when they arise,” he said on the Live Breakfast Club on Monday.

Explaining further, Mr Ayikoi Otoo said labour conflicts are inevitable and bound to happen “you cannot prevent conflicts between individuals, or groups or even married couples. There is always the issue of conflicts arising, that is why we make provision for conflict resolution,” he told sit in host Ruddy Kwakye.
