Saturday,October 18th 2014, marked the 139th birthday of the legendary Dr James Emman Kwegyir Aggrey, the 20th century intellectual giant of Africa. Dr Aggrey became known as “Aggrey of Africa” and “Father of African Education” due to the impact he made on education and the black race.
Descendants and relatives of Dr Aggrey from Ghana and United States converged in his one hundred and two-year old house in Salisbury,North Carolina to celebrate the occasion.
The Mfantseman Association of the Carolinas and members of the Ghanaian community were also there to grace the occasion.
Invited guests had the opportunity to view Dr. Aggrey's over century old personal belongings including kente cloth,piano and typewriter which were put on display.
In an emotional speech, a detailed biography of Dr Aggrey was read by Mrs Benedicta De Graft Hanson, a descendant of Dr Aggrey who came from Ghana.
Mr. Michael Duker,the President of the Mfantseman Association of the Carolinas also paid a glowing tribute to Dr Aggrey, and emphasized on the achievements of Dr. Aggrey which are worthy of emulation by all Africans.
The Mfantseman Association accompanied by Dr Aggrey's descendants and relatives, later laid a wreath at the tomb of Dr Aggrey at OakdaleUnion Hill cemetery, Salisbury, North Carolina.
