T'di Workers Join Strike

Members of the labour unions in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis joined their counterparts in the various regions nationwide to embark on an indefinite strike action which began yesterday.

The move by the labour unions was in protest of government's failure to pay public sector workers their tier two pension funds into a private account.

They were, therefore, of the opinion that it was only strike action that could compel the government to adhere to the demands of the workers.

About 12 labour groups announced their decision to embark on a strike to compel government to pay their tier two pension contributions into a privately managed account.

Some of the unions on strike are the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Public and Health Service Workers Union (PHSWU) and the Ghana Registered Nurses Association (GRNA).

The rest are the Government Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHPA), Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and the Civil and Local Government Staff Association (CLOGSAG).

A visit by DAILY GUIDE to some institutions in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis indicated that most of the employees had complied with their union leaders' directive.

Frank Yeboah, Western Regional Chairman of CLOGSAG and Isaac Lamptey, Financial Secretary of NAGRAT in the Western Region in separate interviews justified the action and urged their members not to resume duty until further notice.
