NPP Meets Over Veep
23.10.2014 LISTEN

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo
The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will today meet to receive a proposal from its flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to retain his two-time running mate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as his vice presidential candidate for the 2016 general elections.

Long before he was re-elected flagbearer of the NPP last Saturday, Nana Akufo-Addo had indicated his intention to retain Dr Bawumia—who was once the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG)—for the third time.

He repeated same last Saturday when he was re-elected to lead the party into the 2016 elections and subsequently presented the name of the celebrated economist to the party's National Steering Committee when he met them on Monday.

The National Council, which is the highest decision-making body of the NPP after Congress, will therefore meet today to decide Dr Bawumia's fate—whether or not to approve his nomination as running mate.

Party sources said the single-purpose meeting is scheduled to come off at 10:00 am.

It will be followed by a press conference expected to be addressed by the re-elected flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo.

Delegates of the NPP on Saturday handed an overwhelming victory to Nana Akufo-Addo with 94.35%, to be the standard bearer once again.

The elections, which took place in 275 constituencies across the country and one special polling station at the party's Asylum Down national headquarters, saw Nana's fellow contenders—Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen and Francis Addai-Nimoh—only managing 4.75% and 0.91% of the total votes cast respectively.

Both conceded defeat and pledged an unflinching support for Nana Addo's candidature the same day, and asked their supporters to do same.

Nana also indicated his preparedness to work with them to win power for the party in particular and the entire nation in general in 2016.

The two have since called on Akufo-Addo at his private office, located at Ridge to reiterate their commitments to the cause.
