Scrap Dealer Nabbed
22.10.2014 LISTEN

Alhassan Kamal
A 36-year-old scrap dealer, who is said to be stealing broken-down vehicles and turning them into scraps for sale, has been arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command.

Alhassan Kamal is alleged to be stealing various broken-down vehicles left on the roads which he purportedly sends to a secret place where he cuts them into pieces for sale.

He was apprehended when he attempted to tow an accident vehicle which had been left on the road by the owner at Weija in Accra.

Confirming the arrest to DAILY GUIDE , ASP Afia Tengey, Accra Regional Public Relations Officer, said that was not the first time Alhassan had been accused of stealing.

The complainant in the case is a driver from Mankesim in the Central Region.

On September 2, 2014, the complainant, driving a cargo truck with registration number AS 7198 W from Mankessim to Yamoransa, was involved in an accident.

On September 12, after a testing officer had examined the truck, the complainant decided to tow it to Accra for body works.

On the way, the towing van also developed a fault at Amanfrom, Weija, and had to be parked by the roadside.

Later in the afternoon, the complainant returned to the area where the broken-down vehicles were left but could not find them.

Residents who spotted another vehicle towing the cargo truck, informed the complainant about it.

The police were immediately informed about the incident and managed to apprehend Alhassan Kamal and the driver of the towing van that was carrying the cargo to the Agbogloshie area in Accra.

The towing van driver told the police that he was hired to tow the vehicle by Alhassan for a fee.

Suspect was detained after police had discovered that he had several other cases of stealing broken-down vehicles.
