General News Postpone AFCON 2015; Christian Council of Ghana demands
OCT 20, 2014 LISTEN

The Christian Council of Ghana says the Confederation of African Football (CAF) must postpone next year's event in the wake of the Ebola outbreak.

The Council believes it is a big mistake for CAF to be shopping for a country that will host the 2015 tournament while the continent grapples with the worse outbreak Ebola.

Morocco was scheduled to host next year's games but the country indicated to CAF it was unable to do so for fear of bringing Ebola to its people.

CAF consequently wrote to the Government of Ghana to consider hosting the games.

But the General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Opuni Frimpong says CAF must postpone the tournament entirely.

He said the continental football governing body must show sensitivity to the plight of the continent which lost over 4,000 people to Ebola.

He was speaking on the topic “EBOLA and SPIRITUALITY” on JOY FM's Christian Talk show “A Walk with Jesus” Sunday night.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the National Peace Council and Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Most Rev. Professor Emmanuel Asante says he does not think that Ghana is sufficiently prepared to deal with any possible Ebola outbreak.

He said the country's porous borders and the tendency for foreigners to sneak in unchecked makes the preparations so far inadequate.

Rev. Prof. Asante said the Church will continue to pray to God to spare the country the Ebola scourge.
