Ghana's comic boxer, Braimah Kamoko, popularly known as Bukom Banku has been declared Ambassador against cholera in the Odododiodio constituency.

Member of Parliament for the area and Deputy Local Government Minister, Nii Lante Vanderpuye bestowed the ambassadorial accolade on the unbeaten Ghanaian boxer during this year's Global Handwashing Day celebration held at the Bukom Square in Accra Wednesday.

Being a role model of the people in the area and professing cleanliness, the minister officially announced that he would from that moment be the ambassador against cholera in the area.

With this arduous task of ensuring that sanitation in the area is improved, Bukom Banku is expected to visit the local schools around the constituency and educate the pupils on the dangers of cholera and how best to avoid being infected.

The celebration was on the theme: “Choose Handwashing; Choose Health”.

Available statistics indicate that as at October 6, 2014, about 20,279 cholera cases were recorded with 164 deaths in nine of the ten regions of Ghana.

Out of the number, the Greater Accra alone chronicled some 16,550 cholera cases with 111 deaths.

Mr. Vanderpuye while addressing the chiefs and people of Bukom admonished them to desist from throwing rubbish in the gutters, which serve as a conduit to the spread of the disease.

He also urged them to make handwashing a top priority in their day-to-day activities as well as observing personal hygiene.
