Ghana Has Capacity And Resources To Host 2015 AFCON—Ayariga

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mahama Ayariga, has boldly stated that Ghana has the capacity and resources to successfully host the 2015 Nations Cup should scheduled host, Morocco, pull out.

Morocco has asked the Confederation of African Football, (CAF), to postpone the January tournament because of fears over the deadly and wide spreading Ebola Virus Disease.

The haemorrhagic fever has killed over 4,500 people across West Africa, especially in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria.

The Continent's football governing body has approached Ghana and South Africa about the possibility of hosting the 2015 Nations Cup.

The oil-producing nation has not recorded any case of Ebola yet, with over 100 tested cases all proving negative.

Ayariga confirmed to Morning Starr host Kafui Dey on Starr 103.5 FM Friday that Ghana has received a request from CAF to consider hosting the tournament.

He added that despite the fears over Ebola, the country is in a good position to host the tournament, since infrastructure built for the 2008 edition are still in place and do not need any upgrade.

“I think that there are a number of partners involved here; our ministry of course would look at capacity to host, in terms of infrastructure, organisation etc. In that regard, I think that we have the capacity and the letter from CAF itself is that we have the capacity and we can do it”.

The former Information minister, however, added that Ghana would monitor the Ebola outbreak on the Continent and review the implications it could have on the country if Government decides to accept CAF's request.

“I can assure you that we have the capacity. The key issue for us is the very health consideration that is pushing the Moroccans, so I think that we have to remain engaged with CAF on those issues both on the continental and the individual national level”, Ayariga said.
